Amethi district is the 72nd district of the state of Uttar Pradesh in northern India. This district is part of Faizabad division. It covers an area of 3,070 km². Gauriganj is the administrative headquarters of the district.

It is better known due to being the seat of power of the Indian Nehru-Gandhi political dynasty since 1980. The former prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru, his grandsons Sanjay and Rajiv Gandhi (the sons of Indira Gandhi), Rajiv Gandhi's widow Sonia Gandhi and son Rahul Gandhi, have at one time or the other, represented its constituency. However, this changed in 2019 when Rahul Gandhi was defeated in the Lok Sabha elections by Smriti Irani, a former TV actress.

As per the 2001 Census of India, Amethi had a population of 12,808. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Amethi has an average literacy rate of 59%, lower than the national average of 59.5%; with 59% of the males and 41% of females literate.

Amethi has the Avionics Division of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, the organisation responsible for manufacture of Aircraft for Indian Airforce. One Ordnance Factory has been established in 2009 by Congress Government to manufacture small arms and weapons.The town contains a unit of Indo Gulf Fertilisers.

Inland aquaculture has arisen as a fast-growing enterprise and a viable alternative to the declining capture fisheries. Carp culture has shown sustainable over the years in India. In Uttar Pradesh, carp culture is main backbone of freshwater aquaculture that accounts for around more than 90% of the total inland aquaculture production of Uttar Pradesh. The present study shows the socio-economic profiles of the fish farmers of eight villages of block Musafirkhana of district Amethi, Uttar Pradesh. This study mainly focuses on their age, educational background, experience in fisheries activities, fish production and species cultured. Present study reveals that majority of farmers are from age group of 45-50 year old, have primary education followed by secondary educations and some old farmers have good experiences in fisheries activities for 15-20 years. This study also shows that the production of Amethi district of Uttar Pradesh is slightly lower than state average production.

This study also finds that the maximum cultured species of fish are Indian major carps and one or two species of Exotic major carps that have good marketing values and consumer’s preference. Although the farmers of block Musafirkhana of district Amethi of Uttar Pradesh cultured carps, size of the pond/farm, species cultured, fish seed procurement, nursery management, feed and feeding management, pond fertilization, source of information on aquaculture, fish seeds and disease treatment, awareness on aquaculture were noticed. Majority of the farmers in this block (60%) has undergone for full time aquaculture and few among them (30%) are participated as part time aquaculture. Fish contribution from this district to overall fish production of state can be improved through training programme by fisheries state department and their fisheries development schemes.
