Hindi: सिद्धार्थनगर , Urdu: سدھارتھ نگر ‎) is one of the 75 districts of Uttar Pradesh state in Northern India. Naugarh town is the district headquarters. Naugarh is also a Railway Station on Gorakhpur-Anandnagar-Gonda broad-gauge line. Siddharth Nagar district is a part of Basti division. The district is known for the ruins of the Shakya Janapada, at Piprahwa which is 22 km away from the district headquarters Naugarh.

The district was named after prince Siddhartha, the pre-enlightenment name of Buddha, as he spent his early years (till the age of 29 years) in Kapilavastu, parts of which included territory in this district.Siddharthnagar District lies between 27°N to 27°28’N and 82°45’E to 83°10’E. The district borders Nepal’s district Kapilvastu on the north and Rupandehi on the northeast. Otherwise it is surrounded by other districts of Uttar Pradesh: Maharajganj on the east, Basti and Sant Kabir Nagar on the south, and Balrampur on the west. Siddarthnagar’s area is 2,895 km sqaure.

Siddharthnagar is a major trading city of Nepal.

There is a custom check point 5 km south near Indian border for the goods transport between India and Nepal.

Around Siddharthanagar, there are several small and large scale industries.

In west towards lumbini there cement and textile industries while there are many steel and block industries in east.

Bhairahawa Special Economic Zone was proposed to increase trade between Nepal and India. Government of Nepal has been encouraging different industries to establish their plant in the SEZ.

Piprahwa is a village near Birdpur in Siddharthnagar district of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. Kalanamak rice, a scented and spicy variety of rice is grown in this area. Piprahwa is best known for its archaeological site and excavations that suggest that it may have been the burial place of the portion of the Buddha’s ashes that were given to his own Sakya clan. A large stupa and the ruins of several monasteries as well as a museum are located within the site. Ancient residential complexes and shrines were uncovered at the adjacent mound of Ganwaria. Some scholars have suggested that modern-day Piprahwa-Ganwaria was the site of the ancient city of Kapilavastu, the capital of the Shakya kingdom, where Siddhartha Gautama spent the first 29 years of his life.
