The Sports City of India. Meerut is a metropolitan city and a municipal corporation in Meerut district in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It is an ancient city located 56 km (35 mi) north-east of New Delhi. It is a part of the National Capital Region of India. It is the 16th largest metropolitan area in India and the 17th largest city in India. It ranked 292 in 2006 and 242 in 2020 in the list of largest cities and urban areas in the world.

Meerut is the 63rd fastest growing urban area in the world. It is also the fastest developing city of Uttar Pradesh after Noida and Ghaziabad. It is spread about 172 square km. It is the 14th fastest developing city of India. The total metropolitian area is 198 km which is third in Uttar Pradesh after Lucknow and Kanpur. It has the 2nd largest army cantonment of the country.

The city is famous for its scissors, Handloom Cloths, gold jewellery, sports goods (especially cricket goods), Gazak and Rewri; and is sometimes called the city of scissors or the sports capital of India. Most of all, the city is famous for the Revolt of 1857, also called India’s First War of Independence, which began here. With the cheap availability of land as compared to Delhi, and being in the proximity of Delhi, the city is fast developing as an industrial and education hub in Western Uttar Pradesh.

Meerut is located on the fertile banks of Ganges and Yamuna and hence from time immemorial, people here have engaged themselves in agriculture and allied activities. Community festivals, revelry and celebrations, have been practiced since ancient times. Also, the presence of mosques, temples and the gurudwaras goes on to prove that communal tolerance and harmony were present in the past. The Nauchandi fair is a popular festival that takes place here annually, it first started in 1672. Even during the British period, the Nauchandi fair was popular among the locals. It was held with great pomp and show, reflecting the nationalism and patriotism, and there are legends attached to it as well.

Industry -In the state of Uttar Pradesh, Meerut is one of the industrial towns of importance as well as an agricultural area with a few pockets that are not suitable for the purpose of crop plantation. As the city is near to delhi, it is a good site for making industries. Works of handloom and even scissors industry has been going on since the olden days. Presently, there are about 520 small scale and medium scale as well as micro industries in the city. As per the date of 2006 of August, there are about 23,471 units of industries, small scale units are 15,510 and cottage industries numbering 7922.

Some of the prominent industries in the city are textile, tyres, sugar, transformer, chemicals, distillery, paper, engineering, sports good and publishing. Some of the industries like IT and ITes have good growth potential. Some famous pharmaceutical companies have their presence in meerut such as Bestochem, Mankind Pharma, perk Pharmaceuticals, etc. The region is one of the country’s most flourishing regions for sports goods manufacturing. The manufacture of Cricket items mainly the SG brand is manufactured in the city of Meerut. This company also has a lot of export products which operate in meerut. Musical instruments in india are maximally manufactured in the city of Meerut. Among the various cities in North India, Meerut was among the first cities where publishing industry first came up in the 19th century and since the 1860s, the place has become an important place for the commercial publishing.

Variety of shops which have branded products of cars, garments, bars and clubs and the gold shops are gradually becoming some of the world’s best and these sectors are employing about 25,000 skilled workers and about 60 kgs of gold is being processed daily. Over 40 BIS Hallmark showroom are found in the city.

As per the statistics that has been collected by the IT department, there has been a contribution of Rs 10,089 crores by meerut towards the national treasury in the year 2007/08, which has surpassed cities like Bhubaneswar, Kochi, Bhopal, jaipur and Lucknow.

Meerut has shown healthy numbers in terms of revenue generation. In 2005–06, Meerut occupied the fifth slot and contributed Rs 10,306 crore to the direct tax collection. It slipped to number six in 2006–07 when the revenue collection at Rs 11,203 crore was 18% lower than the target of Rs 13,627 crore. According to statistics compiled by the Income Tax department, Meerut contributed a Rs.10,089 crore to the national treasury in 2007/08, overall it was ranked 9th outperforming Lucknow, Jaipur, Bhopal, Kochi and Bhubaneshwar.
